a whole year

01 Feb

Christmas was mostly uneventful this year. The majority of Dan’s coworkers went home to their families, so there weren’t a lot of people around. The small group that was, mostly the people living up at the campground by Silver Lake had a potluck on Christmas Eve. We went to that and tried to keep warm, though the building we were in isn’t insulated. Strangely, it was a bit warmer than Thanksgiving when we met up before, so that was a plus. After the potluck we headed over to Curt and Devon Greenfield’s apartment to hang out. It was fun just talking, watching Devon bake a pecan pie, and drinking wine, and we ended up getting home pretty late. In the morning we got up early so we could skype with my parents and sisters. It was nice to at least be able to open presents at the same time, and see each other, even though it wasn’t in person. I really like technology. Now if they would just invent teleportation…

New Year’s Eve we again went to Curt and Devon’s place along with a few other couples. It’s a totally different dynamic spending time with married people as opposed to all the single guys. Both can be fun though. We were all supposed to bring appetizers and a bottle of wine to share, and I made veggie pizza and a baked crab rangoon. I almost wasn’t able to make either, because the power went out for several hours that day. Thankfully I had been asked to cat-sit for one of Dan’s other coworkers, so I was able to go over and use their oven. The cats didn’t mind a bit of extra attention either. The night was fun, though some of the people left before midnight, which seemed weird.

January went by really fast, and it’s hard to believe we’ve been here for a whole year. I’m starting to itch to move on somewhere, but it looks like it could be several months yet. On the plus side, my sister Liz, and her boyfriend are planning to come out and visit us in March, and we’ll get to do a lot of sight seeing. That will be a nice break. Right now we’re gearing up for Valentine’s Day at work, which is going to be stressful. I already know that I’m going to be working pretty much two weeks straight, and I’m not looking forward to it.
